Ranking Bridget Jones Movies Before Mad About the Boy!

With Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy hitting cinemas this Galentines Day (13th February), there is no better time to delve back into the life of our favourite chaotic, rom-com queen: Bridget Jones. Just in case you do not have time to revisit, here is my quick-fire ranking of the Bridget universe including my prediction of where the fourth instalment will land!

  1. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

Coming in fourth is the second film ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Whilst it’s still an enjoyable film with occasional laugh-out-loud moments, the second movie suffers with classic ‘sequel-itist.’ Don’t get me wrong, part of me loved the fact we got our Bridget, Daniel and Mark love triangle take two, but was it necessary? Not really, and I don’t blame Hugh Grant for thinking the same and not returning for the third. I’m also not a fan of many films where the main character is isolated for a major part of the story with characters we do not know which is what happened to Bridget when she was imprisoned.

  1. Bridget Jones’ Baby

The introduction of Patrick Dempsey to the franchise was a brilliant decision. He made the third film feel fresh and modernised for newer watchers. If Bridget were to find herself in another love triangle, who better to compete with our beloved Mark Darcy than McDreamy himself. Despite the 10+ year gap between films, Bridge Jones’ Baby embodied the same humour and wittiness making it a wonderfully balanced film.

  1. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

Whilst the film is not out yet, I just know it will confidently be placed second on this list. I can say with certainty that I will cry at the references to Mark’s death, I will laugh at Bridget being in, yet again, another love triangle, and cheer at the fact Hugh Grant made the decision to return.

The fact Hugh Grant did not reprise his role in Bridget Jones’ Baby makes total sense and is a decision I respect. However, by the looks of the trailer, Daniel being in Mad About the Boy will be a classic fan service moment that connects the final instalment back to where it all began.

  1. Bridget Jones’ Diary

The simple fact is that nothing will beat the original Bridget Jones film. It’s where our love for her (and Mark Darcy…and Daniel Cleaver…) started. Challengers may have upped the love triangle game but Bridget Jones’ Diary is where this genre and sub-plot started. It gave us so many iconic scenes: the image of Hugh Grant emerging from the water with a wet cigarette in his mouth, Renee Zellweger running in the snow in only her underwear, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant fighting in the streets of London to ‘It’s Raining Men’, and the list goes on. It’s a film containing everything you want out of a 2000 rom-com. I’m not ashamed to admit I rewatch this at least 2 times a year.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy hits UK cinemas on February 13th and should be a staple Valentine’s Day date night this year. Be sure to check out our site later this week for a full review of the film after its release.
