Carry-On Review: Netflix's Chaotically Tense Airport Holiday Thriller

Writer: MachwanMachwan

Netflix has just released its latest holiday blockbuster, Carry-On, a film that many will liken to a modern-day Die Hard. With an electrifying mix of tension, humour, and heart-pounding action, this movie promises to be a standout addition to your festive watchlist!

The story follows Ethan Korpek, a disillusioned TSA agent portrayed by Taron Egerton. Tasked with working airport security on Christmas Eve, Kopek finds himself thrust into a high-stakes scenario when he is blackmailed into allowing a dangerous package onto a flight. The mastermind behind this sinister scheme is a mysterious antagonist played by Jason Bateman, whose eerie and manipulative voiceovers inject palpable dread into the film. The result? A gripping game of cat and mouse that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.

Egerton and Bateman Are Phenomenal

Egerton shines as Kopek, capturing the character's internal turmoil as he grapples with impossible choices that test his morality and resourcefulness. His portrayal makes you feel every ounce of the stress and desperation, keeping you invested in his journey. On the other hand, Bateman is chillingly effective as the manipulative antagonist. His voiceovers aren't just unnerving—they heighten the stakes, creating an omnipresent sense of fear that lingers throughout the film. I can't stress enough, you NEED to see Bateman in this.

Tension and Twists Galore

One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its unpredictability. Carry-On is filled with twists and turns that keep the narrative fresh and engaging. Without delving into spoilers, rest assured that there are many here!

Humour Amidst the Chaos

Despite its constant, growing tension, Carry-On finds room for humour, particularly in a hilarious montage of the chaotic scenarios faced by airport security. From travellers forgetting passports to awkward bag inspections and over-the-top ‘Karens’, this sequence serves as a brief respite from the tension while perfectly capturing the absurdities of holiday travel.

There is also an unforgettable sequence featuring arguably the best Christmas song of all time, ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham!

A Must-Watch

With its compelling performances, relentless suspense, and surprising humour, Carry-On is a holiday thriller that delivers on all fronts. It reminds us that, no matter how stressful the holiday season may seem, someone out there is having a worse day—possibly involving blackmail and life-or-death stakes!

Whether you're in it for the action, the laughs, or the holiday spirit, this film is an absolute must-watch. Carry-On is now streaming worldwide on Netflix.
