To A Land Unknown Review: A Raw Look at the Harsh Realities of Refugee Life

Writer: Amy KatharineAmy Katharine

To A Land Unknown follows the heartbreaking journey of two Palestinian refugee cousins, Chatila and Reda, as they flee their homeland in search of safety in Athens. Their goal is simple yet seemingly impossible: securing passports to reach Germany. However, desperation soon leads them into the underworld of crime, a choice that only deepens their struggles and sends their lives into a downward spiral.

A Brutally Honest Portrayal of Refugee Realities

What makes this film particularly compelling is its unflinching portrayal of the harsh realities refugees face. It does not shy away from the moral complexities of survival, nor does it pass judgment on the difficult choices Chatila and Reda are forced to make. Instead, To A Land Unknown presents a raw and powerful exploration of the human cost of displacement, making it an unforgettable and thought-provoking watch.

Powerful, Gritty Performances

Mahmood Bakri (Chatila) and Aram Sabbagh (Reda) deliver raw, deeply immersive performances that anchor the film in authenticity. Their portrayals are gritty and emotionally charged, conveying depth and nuance that transcend language—expressing more than subtitles ever could.

Masterful Storytelling

This was my first introduction to Mahdi Fleifel’s work, and after delving into his background, I discovered his extensive experience in documentary filmmaking. That influence is unmistakable in this feature film, where his masterful storytelling creates a documentary-like atmosphere. The film’s tone and vision feel strikingly authentic, a testament to Fleifel’s own heritage, which shines through in every frame.

Use of Lighting

One of the film’s standout elements is its use of lighting, which further enhances the story’s authenticity. The lighting wasn’t too bright or fabricated, it was raw and real. There was one devastating scene in particular where Chatila and Reda were driving through a tunnel and the screen cut to pitch black. That scene, and its aftermath, stayed with me when the credits rolled.

To A Land Unknown is a story of humanity, exile, and difficult decisions, told with great empathy and care. A thought-provoking, must-watch, especially with the world's current unfortunate climate. To A Land Unknown is in UK cinemas on 14th February 2025.
