Transformers One, the first theatrical animated feature in the series since 1986, gives us the origin story of the beloved Optimus Prime and arch enemy Megatron. Here is our review before the film releases to UK cinemas on October 11th!

As stated, the film follows Optimus Prime and Megatron on Cybertron when they were work miners known as Orion Pax and D-16 - two work best friends!

Now, off the bat the animation is spectacular and the visuals are a real joy to watch. The colours on view are mesmerising and aesthetically pleasing, highlighting the recent approach in better animation filmmaking as seen in Sony’s SpiderVerse movies, Dreamwork’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtler: Mutant Mayhem!

However, what those films have that Transformers One does not, is an engaging plot. The storytelling is where the films falls flat which is surprising due to the interesting premise.

I thought Brian Tyree Henry captured the menacing tones of Megatron exceptionally well whilst Chris Hemsworth showcases a fairly good and youthful part for Optimus. That being said, he’ll never be Peter Cullen. Cullen will always be that guy. That voice is just too iconic to change.

We get to also see the beloved Bumblebee in this film voiced by the incredibly talented Keegan Michael Key, who was a perfect voice casting for the character!

Overall, I do think a lot of people will enjoy this, especially the younger demographic! Even with the weak storytelling, I did have a good time with this one and it’s by no means a bad film. Go see for yourself when it releases on October 11th!
